About the Crew

Dan- Owner/Operator

Dan Morales-Walsh is 32 years old and has been working with stone for over half his life. Working with his dad was his first exposure to stone. A few years after, when the economy took a hit, he started working with other companies. Working for a few larger landscaping companies in the southern Maine area over the next several years allowed him to learn various skills and numerous ways to approach projects. Though he has learned many aspects of stone work and hardscaping, his passion lies in what can be done with two hands and a pile of stones.

In 2013 he began to build at Fort Williams ship cove beach. The goal was to learn the skills needed to understand complex dynamics of dry stone structures only using the stone provided at the beach. Simple sculptures began to become more advanced and after awhile he was featured on “207” as well as in the local section of the Portland Press Herald.

It wasn’t until July of 2016 that Dan decided to fully commit to building his side business, Maine Stone Scapes. He knew that the only way he was going to be able to do the unique projects he wanted to, was through his own business.

2018 was a big year for Dan. Just after the New Year, Dan set off to Europe to learn more about dry stone walling. He spent four weeks in England learning from some of West Yorkshire’s and Lancaster’s best dry stone wallers. He then spent a week in Caithness, Scotland learning from the areas Master Dry Stone waller, George Gunn. His hope on this trip were to gain the skills and insight to take the level 2 Dry Stone Walling Certification test with the Dry Stone Walling Associations of Great Britain. In May of 2018, in Holstein, Ontario, Canada at the Northern Canada Dry Stone Series, Dan successfully passed this Level 2 test, skipping the Level 1 test.

Dan is now the Vice Chairman of The Stone Trust in Dummerston, Vermont. The Stone Trust is a non-profit organization whose goal is to preserve and advance the art and craft of dry stone walling. His role is to help with the programming and site expansion. Dan also competed the DSWA instructed certification course in February, 2020 and teaches intro courses and certification test preps through The Stone Trust around New England, and is working to open an affiliated learning and certification site here in Maine.

Dave I - Craftsman

Dave was Maine Stone Scapes first employee in 2020. In 2014, Dan and Dave worked together at a larger landscaping company and shared a love for dry stone walling. Dave has been working in construction for most of his adult life and is now a DSWA level 2 certified waller and instructor.
